What is Down to Earth?

What is “Down to Earth”?

Ironically, the name “Down to Earth” came about during a walk through the Scottish countryside. We were talking about how to best reach people in this post-Christian culture for Christ. We believe and have experienced that the most effective way is when we were down to earth. Simply when we live authentically we have more of a chance to connect and make an influence on others’ lives. And so we want to be earthy. We want to be real. We want to live on a grassroots level with those in our community.

However, not only is “Down to Earth” about how we will live, but it will also function as our philosophy. We want to imitate the incarnational nature of Jesus’ ministry. He walked, lived and breathed with all sorts of the people, not just the holy and upright (as he was expected to do). It was an everyday affair; he did not retreat to “sacred” places, but lived in the mess of it all. He was God incarnate. He came to bring the Kingdom of God down to earth. It was not just something to be experienced in the future, but to be experienced here and now as well.

Mission

Our mission is to engage primarily the young adult and student population of Edinburgh and help them discover what being a follower of Jesus truly means, outside of the context of a traditional church setting.

How will we do it?

1) Building up and disciplining a Christian community through worship, small groups and missional living

2) Joining and facilitating social groups to engage and make relationships with non-Christians throughout the city

3) Taking part in social activism/justice opportunities to make a positive impact for the kingdom.
